Governor Cisca Stellhorn Visits Club
This morning, the Rotary Club of Signal Hill was honored to host District 5320 Governor Cisca Stellhorn and her leadership team (Assistant Governor Mark Dameron and Chief of Staff Ali Danta) for the Governors Official Visit. The meeting program included Governor Cisca presenting the Inspirational Rotarian Award to Leslie Young, and the Toffee Challenge - a fundraiser for The Rotary Foundation.
Rotary Leadership Transition June 18, 2021
This was our first in-person event since the beginning of the pandemic. We thoroughly reveled in each other’s company, after a 15-month hiatus to gathering. We appreciate Tom Benson for lending his spacious backyard to host the event.
We are grateful for Phyllis Hayes-Reams for serving two terms as our club president. Her unwavering leadership took us through the pandemic, as she adapted the meeting format to Zoom and continued our community service projects, including the school supplies projects and the grocery delivery for the City of Signal Hill.
Congratulations to Albert Chang as our incoming club president. His sense of humor and larger than life personality will take the club in new directions.
Unfortunately, the Rotary International Convention could not take place in Taipei, Taiwan this year. Nevertheless, we celebrated Taiwanese culture by savoring traditional Taiwanese cuisine from a local restaurant, Lucky Number 1 Chinese Food, as our “food evening”.
Rotary International Convention 2021
This time around, we had much more time to transition to a virtual format. The convention is very successful in connecting people across the world.
Bolsa Chica Conservancy
Eric Paquette introduced us to the volunteer opportunities at the Bolsa Chica Conservancy. There is no better time to get outdoors and immerse yourself in nature and preserve our environment for future generations.
Find out how you can get involved.
eRYLA 2021
The Rotary Youth Leadership Award lives on virtually during a pandemic, and there hasn’t been a diminish in the energy or enthusiasm.
I am Somebody
Thank you, David Freeman, for sharing your powerful photographs and bringing awareness to the homelessness crisis.
My personal challenge to everyone is to greet the next homeless person you encounter. You can do this without spending significant time and resource. When you fail to acknowledge their humanity, you are losing a piece of your own humanity.
Gerald Desmond Bridge Replacement
Thank you, Daniel Rhodes, for giving us a virtual tour of the new Gerald Desmond bridge. The club will plan a field trip when the bike and pedestrian path is constructed.
Remembering Candace Yamagawa
We lost an amazing lady, friend, angel, and Rotarian. Candace Yamagawa had touched so many lives and brightened so many days. She worked tirelessly for the wellbeing of others in the community. She fought valiantly against cancer and despair. She will continue to inspire us and warm our hearts.
Joshua Hickman Briefs on Belmont Aquatic Center
The Coastal Commission just approved the design for this project. Lots of future fond memories are waiting to be made at this new facility.
The club is continuing to meet weekly on Zoom.
Spreading Holiday Cheers to Interact Students
Our very own Nancy Lauer and Julie Hammerness organized a gift drive for the Interact students at Nelson Academy. Other club members and teacher assisted in the delivery of the gifts to the students’ families while socially distancing.
