A Little Piece of Paradise
Igor, Jose, and Les wandered into a secret urban oasis for DOGS!
Gum Grove Park in Seal Beach is Les’ Happy Place. It’s where the magic happens. It’s where stress vaporizes like dog pee on hot pavement.
Perhaps we can expand this to a larger audience next time.
Hello, Goodbye
It was bitter sweet bidding farewell to Nancy and Maggie as they prepare to start a new life in Kentucky. As a long-time member of Signal Hill Rotary, Nancy has not only been active and instrumental in coordinating our school supply projects, but also a voice of reason on our board of directors. We wish her well, but she is irreplaceable in our club.
Rotary International
Immigrants from the Philippines, Taiwan, and Ukraine met in Long Beach under the Rotary umbrella. This meeting of the minds represents the best of Rotary and what it can do.
Old Glory
Old Glory and the Rotary flag fly once more at our new location at Starbucks, being revived from storage.
Frank, Les, Jose, Albert, and Nancy reviewed club artifacts retrieved from Bob Long’s condo and Frank recounted his experience touring a prison last week.
Igor and Rosanna from Lviv Rotary Visit
Igor and Rosanna from Lviv, Ukraine were our honored guests this morning, along with Carlos Gallardo from Santa Fe Springs Rotary and Devon Ivey from Alamitos Heights. Igor and Rosanna shared their harrowing stories of the Russian invasion and how it uprooted their lives.
Governor Dan Ouweleen Visits
Governor of District 5320, Dan Ouweleen, visited our club this morning as he introduced the district team and new services that are available to our club.
We look forward to a year of collaboration, friendship, and service together.
Governor Dan also introduced Ernie Delfin, a past president of the Cerritos Rotary Club, to us. Ernie has many connections in the community, and he is planning to introduce many of them as potential new members for Signal Hill Rotary.
First Board Meeting
It’s perhaps the beginning of a beautiful tradition for Signal Hill Rotary. We had 100% attendance at Ten Mile Brewing Co. for the first board meeting of the 2022-23 Rotary year.
Good food, good beer, and good company virtually guarantee everyone to show up after work.
Signal Hill Concert in the Park
It really feels like summer when music waft through the air around city hall in Signal Hill as the season opens for the concert in the park series. There will be a concert every Wednesday evening at 6:00 pm at Signal Hill Park (2175 Cherry Avenue) for the next five weeks.
Rotarians gathered with other Signal Hill residents and enjoyed traditional Cambodian dance and old school rock.
Happy Fourth of July
President Les Young celebrated 4th of July with his fellow Rotarians while supporting the newly minted club of Greater Lake Forest. We spread the word of Rotary to 12,000 parade attendees while governor Dan Ouweleen and his family rode in the motorcade and greeted the crowd.
Honoring Bob Long
Our beloved Bob Long passed away on June 17, 2022. He would have turned 89 years old on July 4th. He never failed to impress anyone whom he encountered. He is an exemplary person and Rotarian. He and his late wife Nancy dedicated their lives to serving the community and they were both past presidents of the Rotary Club of Signal Hill. Nancy started the school backpack program, which became the signature service project of the club for many years.
We will honor Bob’s legacy by naming the inaugural Long Beach Mutt Run after him.
Details of his memorial service at Cornerstone Church are being arranged and to be announced.
