The Inaugural Bob Long Memorial Mutt Run
Despite minor hiccups, the inaugural Bob Long Memorial Mutt Run brought together a community that loves dogs and also connected their humans closer together.
It was a perfect morning for a run on the beach. Now onto February 17th, 2024 for next year’s event!
Mt. Baldy with Ihor
Les shared his love of nature with our club’s Ukranian guest, Ihor. They hiked the Icehouse Canyon trail to the saddle, which is just over 7 miles of moderately strenuous hike.
The scenery was breathtaking and the weather was gorgeous. Ihor was truly impressed by his first experience of a winter hike in the snow. They even stopped at Cerritos to sample some authentic Chinese food.
Best of all, they both made it back and live to tell the tale.
Megan Ignacio & the Adoption Waggin’
Megan Igancio leads the collaboration between Signal Hill Rotary and the Long Beach Animal Care Services in setting up an adoption event at the finish line of the Bob Long Memorial Mutt Run on February 18th.
She briefed us about the operation at he Animal Care Services and discussed the details of our collaborative effort in helping homeless pets.
Los Alamitos/Seal Beach Rotary
Les was the guest speaker at the Los Alamitos/Seal Beach Rotary club. The club meets at the Los Alamitos Navy Golf Course.
Les talked about RYLA, and injected his personal experience with RYLA over the past four years as a camp counselor. Four club members immediately pitched in to purchase raffle tickets to support RYLA.
The fighter jet model pictured was awarded to Tom, the club member who has the highest annual contribution to the Rotary Foundation.
Les Attends President-elect Training
For the second year in a roll, Les attends the president-elect training for the Southwest region at the LAX Marriott. He met plenty of like-minded, enthusiastic Rotarians, ready to change the world for the better.
Surveying Homelessness in Long Beach
Les joined a group of passionate, community-minded individuals to assess the current state of homelessness in Long Beach.
On this crisp, blustery morning, volunteers connected with people in our neighborhood and reconnected with their own sense of universal humanity.
Seal Beach Lions
No, we’re not talking about sea lions, but these Lions are kind and generous (and busy!).
Les invited himself and Ihor as guests to the Seal Beach Lions Club, the largest Lions Club in America. Armed with a life-size poster, Les talked about the Rotary Club of Signal Hill and promoted the Bob Long Memorial Mutt Run among likeminded, community-engaged folks.
Randy Turns 75
Our beloved Randy is turning 75. He is the district leadership liaison and chief inspiration officer. We celebrated his special day with his family and friends at The Grand.
Rotary Cultural Exchange 2023
Rotary governor-elect from district 3790 in the Philippines, Francis Cornejo, met with Ernie Delfin and Les Young to coordinate a cultural exchange program in May of 2023.
Members of a group of 6 to 10 young ambassadors between the ages of 25 and 40 will travel to Taiwan and the Philippines as guests of Rotary Clubs on the other side of the world. The ambassadors will be immersed in exotic cultures and gain deeper understanding of people from another country while forging life-long friendships.
Young Woman and the Sea
We had the privilege of having Glenn Stout as our guest speaker this morning. He is the author of “Young Woman and the Sea”, which accounts the story of Trudy Ederle, the first woman to swim across the English Channel.
The book has been adapted into a new Disney film, coming out in 2023.
Here is a recording of his interview.
