Rotary District 5320 Gala
Ending polio, providing clean water, equipping school supplies, and supporting foster children are just a few things Rotarians are raising money for. It was also a night of fellowship, surprisingly good food, and swinging jazz. Randy and Marianne Hartshorn joined Les at the table.
WomenShelter of Long Beach
Rotarian Frank Dunnick, Jose Quintanilla, and Les Young with their spouses attended the gala of the WomenShelter of Long Beach at the Pacific Gallery in downtown Long Beach to raise awareness and fund to support the victims of domestic violence.
Signal Hill Community Foundation
More than half of our club was present at the fundraising event for Signal Hill Community Foundation. We sampled food from popular establishments in Signal Hill while feasting our eyes on the creations of local artists, all to support community projects in Signal Hill.
Chartering of Rotary PEN OC/LA Club
Ernie Delfin worked tirelessly for the past 18 months to assemble a group of Rotarians to form the new PEN OC/LA Rotary Club. The club consists of members from all over the world, including Philippines, Turkey, and Ukraine.
Governor Dan Ouweleen and his wife Susan graciously hosted the chartering event in their backyard.
Fall Club Social
We enjoyed another lovely club social at Ten Mile Brewing Company, celebrating the fall weather with good pizza and beer while being sucked dry by vicious mosquitoes.
Operation School Bell
Operation School Bell was in full swing at Willard Elementary School today. The Assistance League and fellow community volunteers, including Igor and Les from Signal Hill Rotary, helped hundreds of families equip for the new school year with uniforms, backpacks, school supplies, and books. Dr. Jill Baker and Brian Moskovitz joined the action from LBUSD.
James Johnson Rides Rotary
James Johnson, the president of the Rotary Club of Irvine, brought us his fundraising idea for the community.
Ride for Rotary is raising money for many charitable causes, including:
supporting emergency responders, police, fire, and EMT workers
making Christmas holidays brighter for Marines and their families
funding high school scholarships based on student volunteerism
feeding & housing homeless families
sponsoring and working in pop-up Mexico eye and dental clinics for the needy
building homes in Mexico
supporting water projects in Africa
making blankets for people living with cancer
Saving the ocean, one whale at a time
Captain Paul Watson shared his life story of devotion to saving whales around the world while Rotarians shared good food and wine at Mary and Peter Muth Interpretative Center in Newport Beach.
The Alvarado Connection
Signal Hill Rotary has been collaborating with Alvarado Elementary for years, ranging from school supplies, school gardens, and career day events.
Jose Quintanilla coordinated with the school in procuring a classroom set of headphones for all the students. Principal Cheryl Huber arranged with Frank Dunnick to deliver the headphones directly to the classroom. Igor, a visiting Rotarian from Ukraine, joined club members for the event.
Rotarians also stopped by to admire the thriving school garden made possible by Frank Dunnick’s son, Jack, for his Eagle Scout project.
The Red Brick Memory Lane
The commemorative bricks honoring Dave Swridrak and Candace Yamagawa have been implemented on top of the hill.
Les had lunch at his favorite lunch spot and reflected on the memories he shared with his Rotary friends.
